Veterans Day is a special time to pay tribute and extend our sincerest gratitude to the men and women who bravely and honorably served in various capacities in the United States military. Their sacrifices, in wartime and during peaceful periods, allow all of us to enjoy the freedoms of our country.

Service time in the military can also create challenges for veterans and their families when returning to civilian life - particularly when reentering the workforce. LocalJobNetwork, along with many other groups and organizations, have taken countless steps to raise awareness for veteran employment. This includes best practices for recruiting, ways to build relationships, and assisting employers in fulfilling their VEVRAA requirements for OFCCP compliance.

In fact, the unemployment rate for veterans stood at 3.2% as of October, which is the lowest rate since 2008 when the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) started collecting the data. The unemployment rate for veterans also remains lower than the unemployment rate for non-veterans, just as it did in September.

LocalJobNetwork has annually sent out 1.5 million job postings to veteran organizations, promoting these positions to mutually benefit the individual job seekers and the businesses looking to hire them. Targeting and welcoming veterans into their workforce is a giant first step that many companies have made in recent years, a testament to the value we place in those who put other priorities ahead of their own.

The focus on veterans has also pushed employers to match up the skills and qualifications of certain positions with the roles and duties veterans may have had when in service. This has helped open up the pipelines even further with returning veterans and employers alike having a better understanding of how military experience maps to civilian roles.

If you aren't in a position to recruit and hire veterans, be sure to at least thank someone you know for their commitment, give them some words of encouragement, and keep your eyes open for ways you can support them in their careers and their everyday lives. Happy Veterans Day to all who have dutifully served!
